Why ¡Anda! 2e?
We were pleased by the enthusiastic response to the first edition of ¡Anda!, and we are
honored that so many schools have chosen to adopt it for use in their basic Spanish courses.
The response confirmed our sense that many schools were feeling a need for a new kind of
Spanish textbook program.
We wrote ¡Anda! originally because Spanish instructors had told us that their courses
were changing. In survey after survey, in focus group after focus group, they had said that
they were finding it increasingly difficult to accomplish everything they wanted in their
elementary Spanish courses. They told us that contact hours were decreasing, that class
sizes were increasing, and that more and more courses were being taught partially or totally
online. They told us that their lives and their students’ lives were busier than ever. And as a
result, they told us, there simply wasn’t enough time available to do everything they wanted
to do. Some reported that they felt compelled to gallop through their text in order to cover
all the grammar and vocabulary, omitting important cultural topics and limiting their
students’ opportunities to develop and practice communication skills. Others said that they
had made the awkward choice to use a text designed for first-year Spanish over three or
even four semesters. Many instructors were looking for new ways to address the challenges
they and their students were facing. We created ¡Anda! to meet this need.
The challenges we heard about from all these Spanish instructors still exist today, and
thus our goals and guiding principles for the second edition of the ¡Anda! program remain
the same as they were in the first edition. But we have made many changes in response
to helpful suggestions from users of the earlier edition, and we have sought to make the
program even more flexible than its predecessor and even more focused on students’ and
instructors’ needs.
